Newspapers: Daily Mirror- Language & Audience

 Language

1) Write the definition of the following key language for newspaper front pages (you may want to add an example for each from our Daily Mirror CSP):

Masthead: Title block of newspaper
Pug: something to catch reader's eye
Splash Head: Lead story
Slogan: Sum up ethos of newspaper
Dateline: Date newspaper was published
Kicker: Story at top to draw interest in content
Byline: Name of article writer
Standfirst: Intro paragraph usually in bold.

2) How much does a copy of the Daily Mirror cost? (Note: the current cost is different to the CSP edition - I recommend learning both).

A copy of the Daily Mirror cost 80p however the price has recently changed to 90p.

3) What are the main stories on the CSP edition of the Daily Mirror (see above)? Make sure you learn the headline and what the stories are about.

The Royal Family, Film celebrities, Measles epidemic fear.

4) Why is the choice of news stories on the Mirror CSP front page typical of a tabloid newspaper?

Tabloid newspapers contain soft news which is covered in this newspaper (celebrity gossip, lifestyle issue of the epidemic fear. royal family gossip which is a nation wide topic talked about.) Tabloid newspapers also contain more pictures than writing on the front page which we see here as well.

5) What is the balance on the Daily Mirror front page between images, headlines and text?

The Daily Mirror has bigger, bolder images and bright headlines to catch the audiences attention straight away. There is very little amount of text which presents how they don't want the audience to lose interest however this also can be interepreted as the Mirror is more for the working class therefore stereotypically we can consider them as non-intelligent therefore images are more easier for them to analyse/read than text.

Audience

1) What is the target audience for the Daily Mirror?

The target audience is older working class members.

2) Why does the Mirror front page story appeal to the Daily Mirror audience?

The front page communicates how older people love gossiping about the Royal Family and celebrities, it also shows how they're interested in lifestyle issues which may affect them and their family members and cause issues.

3) Why might a reader enjoy the Daily Mirror? Use Blumler & Katz Uses and Gratifications theory to add detail to your answer.

A reader may enjoy Daily Mirror due to the Surveillance they're given about the Royal Family, common issues going on in their lifestyles, they're also given entertainment about the Bond Stars revealed maybe something to look forward to as well as the discussion of the royal family and their lives+ relationships connects "normal people" to celeb world. Personal Relationships can also be used here as the readers may care about these celebrities and their lives. E.g if Kate will be able to fix this royal rift between Harry and William.

4) Why are print newspapers generally read by older audiences?

Print newspapers are read more by older newspapers due to the rise of new digital media more younger people are engaged in media as they were brought up with it however older generations didn't have social media, internet to look at newspaper articles.

5) How is the 'Wills and Harry royal rift' story on the double page spread constructed to appeal to Daily Mirror readers?

It makes the royal family seem like a normal family which many of the working class may relate to (Personal Identity)
