Magazines: Introduction to Representation

 1) Write a definition of representation in media studies.

Representation is how individuals, events or groups are presented/ portrayed.

2) Now look at the cover of Closer magazine above. List all different types of people and groups represented on the front cover. E.g. women, celebrities, race/ethnicity etc.

-Men

-Women

-Celebrities

-Weight loss

-Mums/Babies

-Marriage

-Dating

3) What does the representation of women on this front cover suggest female audiences are mainly interested in?
The representation of women on this front cover suggests that female audiences are mainly interested motherhood,love/dating,celebrities lives and losing weight.

4) Are there any stereotypes you can identify? E.g. women and motherhood; celebrities etc.

-Motherhood
-Celebrities

5) Is there anything on the cover that subverts typical stereotypes in the media?

Yes, the UK's first gay dad as there's a stereotype that men are supposed to be masculine and the head of the family but because the dad is gay it subverts this stereotype as he doesn't have the stereotypical family that most people have. ( wife, husband and kids)

6) What is the preferred reading of this magazine cover - what do the producers want audiences to think when they see it?

I think the producers want the audience to relate,be interested or seek for advice in the magazine when they see it. E.G: For women they think celebrities, gossip, motherhood and dating is what women seek for entertainment, advice and what they relate to the most.

7) What is the oppositional reading of this magazine cover - how might someone criticise this magazine cover or be offended by it?

Some people may be offended by this magazine as it's saying that women only care about motherhood, appearance and celebrities which is not true as everyone has different interests and not all women are interested in these things that are shown on the magazine.

8) What are the social and cultural contexts to this magazine cover? What effect might this magazine have on readers or society?

The effect this magazine might have on readers or society is pressure to women as this magazine is mostly aimed at women and today's society most people think women only care about apperances, dieting and motherhood. This then puts pressure on women as the women who are reading/looking at the magazine feel a pressure to fit in with society and look as "perfect" as the celebrities shown on the cover. Therefore they will pressure themselves and feel insecure because of how the magazine is portraying today's society.
